About the Author

Stuart Macintyre was born and educated in Melbourne, Australia, and completed his doctorate at Cambridge in 1975. In 1980 he returned to the University of Melbourne and was appointed Ernest Scott Professor of History at the University of Melbourne. He has served terms as dean of the Faculty of Arts and President of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Juan Maiguashca was born in Ecuador and educated in the United States, France, and Britain. He obtained his doctorate at Oxford, St. Antony's College, in 1968. He has been a research fellow at the London School of Economics and The Adlai Institute of International affairs (University of Chicago). From 1972 until his retirement he taught at the Department of History of York University, Toronto, Canada.

Attila POK is deputy director of the Institute of History of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest and visiting professor of history at Columbia University in New York. His publications and courses cover three major fields: 19th-20th century European political and intellectual history, history of modern European historiography, theory and methodology of history.

The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom is one of my all-time favorite books. I was excited when I found this book as a way to introduce my children to her. I thought the authors did a great job in helping young children understand what an amazing woman she is!Corrie and her family lived in Holland. They helped the Jews escape the Nazis and were eventually caught. She and her sister were sent to live in a concentration camp. It was a difficult time and there were tears in our eyes as we read certain parts. One of the things that surprised me the most when I first read her story was her age--she was actually in her 50's when she was caught. Her story is filled with miracles, faith and forgiveness, and is one that will inspire people of all ages!

I purchased this book for my son after he finished the book about Brother Andrew in the same series (Christian Heroes: Then & Now). All the books in this series give kids a wonderful introduction and overview of the lives of those who have dedicated their lives to serving God.I had read The Hiding Place this year, and after discussing it with my family, my son told me he wanted to read it. I was a bit hesitant, since there were some parts of the book which might be a little traumatic or descriptive for a young reader. So I was thrilled to find Corrie ten Boom: Keeper of the Angels' Den.This book was perfect. It told the story of Corrie ten Boom in an age-appropriate, but still accurate manner. My son was amazed at all Corrie and her family did to help others, and all they were willing to give up in order to do what they felt God wanted them to do.I highly recommend this book, and others in the Christian Heroes series.

We've now read several of the books in this series, and have loved every one of them so far. This book is no different. We used this book as a read-aloud for my 2nd-grader, and both of us got so wrapped up in the story, that we set aside the rest of our schoolwork for several days so we could finish the story!This story, in particular, touches my heart. Ever since I was a child, I would think about the victims of the Holocaust any time I had a particularly bad day, just to remember how blessed I am to live in this day and age. These stories are helping my children, now, to realize how blessed we are--that our discomforts and disappointments are nothing compared to what so many other people have and are experiencing. The lesson in this story, "There is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper," still rings true today. I hope this book made a firm impression on my daughter, so that when she faces tough times, she will trust in the faithfulness of God and His love for her.

This book will inspire you and teach young and old that God can do extraordinary and marvelous things even in bleak and terrifying surroundings.Corrie Ten Boom was an ordinary watchmaker's daughter when her family was arrested for helping Jewish people escape the Nazi's. They were taken to prison and suffered greatly under the hands of their captors. Yet Corrie and her sister always looked towards God and where thankful for all of the blessings he gave them, such as a patch of blue sky, a hidden Bible, the women they read the Bible too. This book tells the story of Corrie and how she survived the war and went on to help others by telling them about God's love and forgiveness. Corrie learned a lot from her prison experience, but most of all, Corrie learned that by leaning on God, she can share God's love and forgiveness to all, even to her enemies and those who hurt her.

This magnificently written Christian biography book is perfect for a book report, particularly for a student who attends Christian private school or who is homeschooled (as my 13 year old son). Corrie ten Boom truly went through hell on earth just to satisfy God in Heaven; when it is my time to go, she is one of the many individuals I would love to meet when I get there! Should you read this book, prepare your heart (and perhaps a hankie). My opinion, not enough stars to rate it! :-)

all the books that i have read written by Ms. Ten Boom are inspirational and awe inspiring...the things that God did in and through her are amazing. What a beautiful woman of faith she was.

Inspiring and instructive about how totalitarianism works. Keeps your attention. The audible version was worth the extra few dollars. Very engaging and yet professionally done.

As is described in the Introduction, the most interesting thing about the artists, thinkers and inventors included in this book is that they all have unique rituals that help them work. The majority of personalities are writers, but visual artists, composers and philosophers are also covered. I find it refreshing to read about how apparently "lazy" some of the artists are, while others are absolutely rigid with their routines.The only thing the book seems to be missing is pictures of the artists' work spaces. The space and tools with which an artist creates are also of interest and plays into the rituals that go along with the creative process. Much of this information could probably be gleaned from extensive digging on Wikipedia, but Currey does a good job of keeping things clipping along and you find yourself reading a few extra profiles of artists whose names you may not recognize. An enjoyable read and quite easy to pick up and put down.

So here's the takeaway:1. The people described in this book all work very hard and, frequently, VERY long hours.2. Regular, extended exercise - usually walking - is frequently an important part of their routines.3. They're mostly early risers, with significant exceptions, and do their best work in the first several hours of the day. There are a few nightowls but not many.4. They have a work routine that they adhere to almost fanatically.5. Finally, implicitly, habits are key in their successes and productivity.There, I've saved you the price of this book.The stories about the different artists are frequently interesting on their own account and very useful in fleshing out the "takeaways" listed above. I don't think it's intended as a self-help book. The author doesn't attempt to derive a series of lessons from his subjects' activities but a pattern emerges after reading a lot of these.

Excellent book for those readers who want to get a glimpse into the schedules of extraordinary talented artists...namely, that even true masters have to find the mundane ritual of daily routine a necessity when creating great work. The creative process is often thought of as elusive and transient, however this book goes to great lengths to show how a steady working schedule can often lead to some of the modern world's greatest creative achievements. Very inspiring for those wanting to create some kind of art in their day...

Small format books ask us not to take them seriously, but don't be fooled here. This little gem is a fount of inspiration for anyone with creative urges and dreams. The diversity of creators represented is a welcoming affirmation that whoever you are and however you create, there's a place for you at the table. If you're disciplined, you'll find models of discipline. If you're a hard partier, you'll have good company. If you're reclusive, you'll be affirmed in your desire and need for solitude. Mason Currey has done a fine job bringing creators from many centuries into our awareness to speak for themselves or be spoken about. Thank you.

This book was described in a catalog I receive. It sounded interesting so I checked out a copy from the local library. Half way through reading a library copy I ordered a copy. If you do creative work of any kind you are probably trying to find out how to organize your time and effort for best results. I am. I wanted to see how successful artists do it. This book is heavily researched and also very readable. It is not a 1,2 & 3 and you will be successful type book. It is about life stories. I bought a copy for ongoing reference. I have read it through and i'll be referring to it over the years.

Okay, well maybe Iâ€™m the only one that does those things. If not, join the ranks of many creatives that have rituals or behaviors that get their creative muscles warmed up and ready for the battle of the blank sheet or canvas.As a creative who grew up with other creatives, Daily Rituals piqued my interest and would hopefully feed my curious nature. Maybe this middle of the night creative could pick up a few tricks of the trade from some of the most successful artists in the world. Perhaps I could gain a little insight into how they became so successful and in some cases are still going strong. If nothing else, it would be fun to take a peek behind the curtain.And it was. I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, informative, enjoyable read.

About the Author

Jairus David, Ph.D., is Senior Principal Research Scientist at ConAgra Foods headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. David’s responsibilities include science leadership and development of intervention technologies for food protection and process & quality optimization. David is a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), and is the recipient of IFT’s prestigious Industrial Scientist Award for developing and influencing the public health food safety policy on the use of honey in cereals and bakery products for the prevention of infant botulism in infants under 12 months of age. David earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology with Thermal Processing emphasis from the University of California at Davis.

Ralph H. Graves held the position of Senior Vice President for Real Fresh, Inc., as a company involved in the processing and sale of aseptically packaged foods. His responsibilities included the research and development of processing techniques, quality control, engineering, and maintenance and warehousing of aseptically packaged dairy products. Although now officially retired, Graves continues his work in this field as a consultant.

Thomas E. Szemplenski is the owner of Aseptic Resources, Inc., a consulting company dedicated to assisting food processors and equipment manufacturers with aseptic processing techniques. He has more than four decades of food processing and packaging experience―the vast majority of time dedicated to aseptic processing and packaging techniques, commercial application, and marketplace dynamics.

Some action steps that were especially interesting to me included: dressing like the people you want to become in your industry (something I've started doing!), avoiding the glamorization of the media, and reducing the size of to-do lists.Thanks for your art Barrie!

This is a good self help book with all of the basics. It is well written and easy to read and understand. I gave it four stars because there is nothing new here and it is simply redesigned and organized a little differently than all of the others. A good reference book that you can grab off the shelf as needed.

Well articulated, interesting and really worth reading. The author has given practical ideas to follow to overcome the difficulties and develop confidence. I really like this book and intend going through other books authored by Barrie Davenport. The book is simple and easy to grasp. It's highly recommended for all those interested to improve their confidence. Equally recommended for younger and adults.

Even if you are already confident in many areas of life, this book will still be very helpful for you, and will likely cover something that you haven't thought of already. The 99 hacks are broken out into several subject areas, or themes, so it's not just a single never-ending list (that you sometimes get with other e-books). Will buy a copy for my wife!

Succinct condensed topics with tools to take with you. Although easily read in one sitting, the subject matter deserves smaller bites to allow time for reflection.I will take the recommendation of doing a re-read and focusing on those areas in need of the most work.

This book is chock full of helpful "action steps" that you can take to boost your confidence. Each of us can recognize flaws in ourselves that destroy our confidence, but very few of us know what specifically to do about them. After reading this book you'll clear ideas of steps you can take to boost your confidence level. There are also interesting anecdotes to help you realize that when your confidence is waning that you are no different than some of the most successful people in the world.

This original "Confidence Hacks" touches on so many of the insecurities in every aspect of our lives that we all have. Ms. Davenport deftly covers very specific internal feelings and the situations that we run into which trigger those, and gives sound advice for dealing with each one. None of us can realistically take on a massive make-over of who we are, nor would we want to, but taking small steps, practicing by using the guidance here, and adjusting to what works can really make a huge difference over time.Let's face it - we are raised to be insecure, to lack confidence. From the time we are young, teachers and parents point out all of the ways we need to improve and that we need to shore up our 'weaknesses'; This continues into the workplace where our employee evaluations focus on not only what we're doing well, but where we fall short or need improvement. And then, the focus is placed on coming up with a plan to address those weaknesses - but we rarely put together a plan to leverage our strengths more. This life time of focusing on what's 'wrong' with us naturally leads to self-criticism and a lack of confidence in at least some areas of our lives.Barrie Davenport breaks her guidance into different areas that make up our lives and then provides actionable advice for recognizing the triggers and dealing with them. What makes this approach wonderful, is that you can easily scan the Table of Contents in Kindle and then easily navigate to those areas that you know are your hot buttons. She covers: Relationships, Social Life, and Career, and includes such important aspects of building confidence by learning how to set boundaries, focus on the positive, deal with rejection, identifying your anxieties, becoming a better listener, speaking up at work, dealing with past failures, and so much more. And, she does it in a way that is compassionate and empathetic.Kudos, on such a well thought out and helpful book, Ms. Davenport!!
