Growing up in the Bronx in the shadow of the Throgs Neck Bridge, Larry Lawton was an altar boy until the day he was sexually molested by a priest. He was sent to solitary, tortured by guards, and after he began a letter writing campaign to publicize the brutality of prison life, he was targeted by the warden for further abuse. One day the guards beat him, stripped him naked, strapped him down spread eagle, and urinated on him as punishment. Keep writing, Lawton, said one guard as he walked away. After Lawton served his term, he was asked by a friend to talk to the friend s son, a boy who clearly was headed for a life of crime. There were times when this book was tough to get through because of the strong emotions that are brought to the surface, but it was also comforting to know that others had experienced similar issues with difficult mothers. It is true that children of abusive mothers can be good at parenting despite the bad example they grew up with as I experienced flashbacks of traumatic moments from my own childhood while doing the most basic tasks for my beloved child and vowed never to treat my offspring in such an abusive manner.

This book is a "good mother." Every page describes how I feel/have felt. The book puts words to feelings I didn't realize or only vaguely realized until I read the descriptions in the book. I feel heard, validated, and able to heal.

Finding it easy to read and understand. Has written exercises for you to participate in. Would recommend seeing a qualified therapist as it covers an indepth look into your relationship with your mother and could bring up issues that need to be talked thru.

Well-written, clear, not soppy, not full of client examples.

Prior to reading this book, I had an extremely difficult time with inner-child work in my recovery process. This book facilitated a breakthrough in trauma recovery that I am so grateful for. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with childhood trauma.

This book is excellent for someone dealing with childhood emotional neglect issues in their adult life. I admit that I had to quit reading for a while because the pain is too real! I never realized how much was repressed and bottled up inside me that the flood of memories was too painful all at once. I recommend this book in conjunction with talk therapy. Mourning the loss of your childhood is both painful and healing, mothering yourself is essential for recovering from emotional neglect.

Clear, concise language and a well-organized plan to understand how important the mother/child relationship is for each person's growth and happiness, and how to heal from the injuries inflicted by mothers who couldn't or wouldn't give their child what every person needs from a mother to be healthy and happy.

This book is for those who don't have all those warm fuzzy memories of the loving, supportive, compassionate mother... and for those who have loving mothers who just couldn't give you what you needed, even if you didn't know you needed it. I find myself coming back to this book again and again. I have read others, but I think Ms Cori cuts to the point without sounding too afternoon tv show ish. I cried through it the first time, but this book really helped me realize where some (ok, many) of my maladaptive behaviors came from. On your journey towards personal growth, this is a great help.

What they will get is dull, predictable and surprisingly tame. Madison Dupre, 34 and single, is out to secure her place in the rarefied world of antiquities by acquiring a $50-million Babylonian death mask for her employer, the Piedmont Museum of Mesopotamian Art. The mask's legendary curse soon kicks in: at its unveiling, an uninvited Iraqi insists that it was among the treasures taken by looters from Baghdad's National Museum of Antiquities following Saddam's downfall. With her job, reputation and even freedom (the FBI thinks she's in on the fraud) on the line, Madison sets out to unmask the looters, which turns out to be a very unsafe undertaking indeed. The incestuous, fiercely competitive antiquities world makes for an intriguing setup, but Podrug's execution is clunky. The action is improbable, the dialogue hackneyed, the sex (a Robbins hallmark) pedestrian and scarce. Status-obsessed Madison is hardly likable. Robbins died in 1997; it may be time to let him rest.
